Bitcoin development is growing at an unprecedented rate! Everything from NFTs, to Ordinals and Bitcoin DeFi has come a massively long way since the 2020/21 bull cycle. Now Bitcoin ecosystem development is set to be the driver for the next bull run, as we fast approach the halving of 2024. Who are the innovators building on the world’s most secure blockchain?

In this edition of Coinscrum, we are joined by Rootstock and a group of developers building successful dapps on Bitcoin via RSK.

Rootstock is a smart contract platform that is secured by the Bitcoin network. It is a sidechain of Bitcoin, which means that it is connected to the Bitcoin blockchain through a consensus mechanism known as merge-mined proof of work (PoW). Over 50% of Bitcoin’s hash power currently mines Rootstock. This means that Rootstock is mined by more hashpower than any other chain, except Bitcoin itself.

Using RIF (Rootstock Infrastructure Framework) developers are able to build smart contracts, DeFi protocols and more, whilst leveraging the security and finality of the world’s most secure blockchain, Bitcoin!

The network has rapidly become known as ‘the home of DeFi on Bitcoin’ due to the growing number of users around the world using the network to access a range of apps, tokens and financial services all secured by Bitcoin. This includes decentralized exchange Sovryn, lending and borrowing platform Tropykus and Bitcoin collateralized stablecoin protocol, Money on Chain.

During the session, the CEO of IOV Labs will also share details on their $2.5m grant programme designed to drive innovation on Rootstock as part of their work to build a more decentralized world, for a freer and fairer future.

Rootstock is designed to expand the functionality of the Bitcoin blockchain to address limitations such as its slow transaction speed and high fees. It makes it possible to develop and deploy smart contracts on Bitcoin using an advanced version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) known as the Rootstock Virtual Machine (RVM). Given Rootstock’s compatibility with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), Developers experienced in building on Ethereum can easily start building decentralised applications (dApps) and integrations on the network. Developers can use the same Solidity tools and libraries they are accustomed to when building on Ethereum, including Hardhat, Truffle, web3.js, and ethers.js.
